Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has introduced a new stage to the Ethereum technical roadmap, one that intends to strengthen the network’s censorship resistance and decentralization.

Buterin unveiled the new intentions for the Ethereum network in a tweet on November 5 that introduced the Scourge as part of an extended six-part technical roadmap.

After the transition to a proof-of-stake (PoS) network on September 15, Ethereum has been in the second stage, the Surge, with the goal of reaching 100,000 transactions per second via rollups.

The revised technical road plan now identifies the Scourge as the third stage, which will be followed by the previously established stages, the Verge, the Purge, and the Splurge.

Scourge aims to “ensure reliable and genuinely neutral transaction inclusion and minimize centralization and other protocol issues from MEV,” per the Ethereum road map.

As miners have been known to manipulate transactions on the Ethereum network to their advantage, the Ethereum co-founder has called for a more “credibly neutral” consensus layer.

Buterin has previously defined a neutral mechanism as one that “does not discriminate against or favor particular individuals.”

Miner Extractable Value (MEV) happens when a miner gains an advantage over other network members by choosing which transactions to include in a block and in what order.

This permits miners to copy all winning transactions from the mempool and execute their transactions before arbitrage seekers or anyone attempting to profit.

Following the Merge, Ethereum has become associated with a greater degree of centralization and censorship.

On November 3, following the network’s shift to PoS, the percentage of blocks compliant with the U.S. Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) hit 73%, a statistic considered by many to be excessively high.

Anthony Sassano, the founder of The Daily Gwei and an Ethereum bull, previously stated on Twitter on October 15 that censorship resistance is currently “more crucial than scaling.”

While the full details of the Scourge have not been released, the co-founder of Ethereum has recently proposed a “Partial Block Auction” solution in which a block builder is only permitted to determine a portion of the block’s contents.
