In a poll arranged by Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk, a narrow majority voted in support of reinstating the former U.S. president, who was banned from the social media service for inciting violence. However, Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he had no interest in returning to Twitter.
Slightly more than 15 million Twitter users participated in the survey, with 51.8% favoring reinstatement.
“The population has spoken. Trump will return to office,” Musk tweeted.
Trump’s Twitter account, which had over 88 million followers until he was banned on January 8, 2021, began gaining followers on Saturday evening and had approximately 100,000 followers by 10 p.m. ET.
Saturday evening, some users first reported that they were unable to follow the reactivated account. Trump appeared uninterested earlier in the day. The former president responded via video when asked by a panel at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership gathering whether he wanted to return to Twitter.
He stated that he will continue to utilize Truth Social, the app established by his Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) business, which he claimed had greater user interaction than Twitter and was performing “phenomenally well.” Twitter declined to comment in response to a request.
Trump hailed Musk and said he has always loved him. On Tuesday, Trump announced his bid to retake the White House in 2024. But Trump also stated that Twitter was plagued by bots and false accounts, and that its problems were “extraordinary.”
Musk stated in May that he intended to overturn the ban on Trump, and many of Twitter’s advertisers closely monitored – and feared – the date of Trump’s comeback.
Since then, the billionaire has attempted to reassure users and advertisers that such a decision would be taken by a content moderation committee comprised of individuals with “vastly varied opinions” and that no account reinstatements would occur before the council assembled.
Additionally, he stated that Twitter would not reinstate banned users until there was a “clear process” for doing so. This week, Musk reinstated comedian Kathy Griffin, who had been banned for changing her profile name to “Elon Musk” without noting it was a parody account, in violation of his new rule against impersonation. There are no new details on the process or the moderation council.
Trump’s absence could calm the nerves of major advertisers, who are already unsettled by Musk’s radical redesign of Twitter. The workforce has been halved, and the company’s trust and safety team, which is responsible for stopping the spread of disinformation and hazardous content, has been drastically reduced.
These moves plus Musk’s tweets have prompted large firms to suspend advertising on the site while they monitor how it handles hate speech.
On Saturday, Bloomberg reported, citing anonymous sources, that Twitter may lay off more personnel in its sales and partnership units, only days after a major exodus of engineers.
If Trump returned to Twitter, his dedication to Truth Social, which debuted on Apple’s App Store in February and Google’s Play Store in October, would be called into question.
Trump has approximately 4.57 million Truth Social followers. Since he began routinely posting on the app in May, Truth Social has been Trump’s primary means of communicating directly with his followers. He has using Truth Social to promote his allies, disparage his opponents, and defend his reputation in the face of state, congressional, and federal judicial inquiry. Trump’s relationship with the firm, though, allows him to engage heavily on other platforms.
Trump is required to give Truth Social a six-hour exclusive on any post, but is free to post “political messaging, political fundraising, and get-out-the-vote operations” on any site, at any time, according to an SEC filing from May.
