Too small of an airplane seat? The FAA might alter that shortly

There is little doubt that airlines have been “maximizing profits” for some time, charging for everything from checking bags to the ability to have a reserved seat.

In addition to charging more, airlines have been trying to cram more passengers onto airplanes, which has resulted in narrowing seat width and “pitch,” or the space between passengers and the seats in front of them, called legroom.

However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently collecting comments on a proposed rulemaking that would establish minimum seat dimensions and pitch length for all U.S. airlines.

The pitch length decreased from 35 inches to 31 inches over the past ten years, and some airlines, like Spirit (SAV), have even lowered it to 28 inches. This is occurring at the same time as Americans are getting larger; according to an FAA research, the average guy has acquired 15 pounds and two inches to his waist, while the average female has gained 16 pounds and three inches.

Even though the rulemaking only asks for comments “necessary for the safety of air passengers” in the event of an emergency evacuation, thousands of people have still commented on seat sizes. (Here, you can watch and comment.)

As an illustration, the agency website had more than 9,500 comments as of 12:30 this afternoon.
