According to lawyers for former FTX CEO Sam-Bankman Fried on 25 August, US prosecutors have recently unloaded a tremendous volume of discovery materials.
Lawyers protested extensively in the relevant court filing to the government’s aim of allowing access to discovery materials — that is, evidence and legal information — while Bankman-Fried is detained in the Metropolitan Detention Centre, Brooklyn (MDC).
Lawyers emphasised the importance of the amount of information at stake, stating:
“We also object to the government’s production of an additional 4 million pages of discovery just yesterday.” The government cannot dump millions of pages on the defence fewer than six weeks before trial.”
Lawyers also stated in the statement that discovery information has amounted to terabytes of data to date, with millions of further pages on the way.
Bankman-Fried’s attorneys also stated that the government had no plans to give discovery documents to their client at MDC, despite the fact that his trial date is swiftly approaching. As a result, lawyers petitioned the court to provide Bankman-Fried internet access. They said that current plans, which allow Bankman-Fried to meet with lawyers twice a week, are insufficient to complete the necessary data review.
