In a shocking turn of events, the Twitter account of OpenAI’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, was compromised, potentially affecting tens of thousands of users.

After compromising the CTO’s account, the attackers used it to implement a fraudulent cryptocurrency airdrop.

The fraud centred on a malicious ERC-20 token with the moniker OPENAI.

Despite having an hour-long lifespan, the misleading tweet reached an estimated 80,000 users before it was removed.

According to security expert Scam Sniffer, the attack was carried out by Pink Drainer, a type of “malware-as-a-service” that enables users to rapidly launch malicious website hosting. According to reports, the services charge up to 30 percent of any misappropriated assets in exchange for the software.

According to Scam Sniffer, Pink Drainer has been exceptionally active in recent days, stealing over $1.8 million from over 500 victims since May 30.
