At least 141 persons were killed when a pedestrian suspension bridge in the western Indian state of Gujarat collapsed.

A local official reported that the majority of the deceased were women, children, or the elderly. A week ago, the bridge in Morbi was reopened following renovations.

The bridge was overcrowded at the time because people were celebrating Diwali, according to officials.

The 230-meter (754-foot) Machchu river bridge was constructed during British control in the 19th century.

The number of fatalities is projected to climb higher.

Police, military, and emergency response teams have been sent, and the rescue operation is ongoing.

More than 177 individuals have been rescued thus far, according to officials.

“Many youngsters were on vacation for Diwali and came here as tourists,” Sukram, an eyewitness, told the Reuters news agency.

“They all landed on top of one another. The bridge collapsed as a result of overuse.”

Social media videos depicted dozens of people clinging to the debris as rescue teams worked to free them. Some survivors scaled the bridge’s damaged netting, while others reached the riverbanks by swimming.

Several hundred people were reportedly on the bridge when it collapsed on Sunday at approximately 18:40 India time.

A video captured prior to the collapse revealed that the structure was filled with people and swaying, with several clinging on the side netting.

Authorities have pledged a comprehensive inquiry. Concerns have been raised regarding whether safety inspections were conducted prior to the reopening of the bridge. It is a well-known tourist destination known locally as Julto Pul (swinging bridge).

According to Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, a number of criminal proceedings have been filed in relation to the incident.

Prateek Vasava was on the bridge when the event occurred. He explained to the Gujarati-language news station 24 Hours how he had swum to the riverbank.

Several youngsters went into the river, he said, adding, “I wished I could have rescued some of them, but they perished or were washed away.”

Gujarat is the home state of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has promised victims’ families compensation. He expressed “great sorrow” over the tragedy.
