The chief legal officer of Coinbase issued an apology on Thursday for stating in a newsletter that some groups view Pepe the Frog as a hate symbol for far-right groups.
Paul Grewal, the chief legal officer of Coinbase, tweeted, “We messed up and we’re sorry.” “Yesterday, we provided a factual overview of the $pepe meme coin in order to shed light on a trending topic. We apologise to the community for not providing a comprehensive account of the history of this meme.
The newfound popularity of the Pepe memecoin prompted the drama. The market capitalization of the cryptocurrency token modelled after the Pepe the Frog meme surpassed $1 billion for the first time this month.
Coinbase published a newsletter detailing the meme’s origins. Pepe the Frog is listed as a “general hate symbol” on the website of the Anti-Defamation League.
The hashtag #DELETECOINBASE began circulating on Twitter shortly thereafter. It appears that the reference to Pepe as a hate symbol has been removed from the Coinbase newsletter.
