The Chinese market regulator announced on Thursday that Tesla intends to recall over 435,000 vehicles in China and deliver software upgrades to address a rear light issue.

According to China’s State Administration of Market Regulation, 142,277 Model 3 sedans and 292,855 Model Y cars may be affected by the issue in which a software error prevents the rear lights from activating.

The authorities stated that this posed a threat to motorist safety.

Last month, Tesla recalled over 321,000 vehicles in the United States due to a similar problem.

Tesla will remotely deploy software upgrades to resolve the issue.

In China, Tesla is facing increasing technical challenges. The U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer recalled nearly 80,000 vehicles in China last week due to seatbelt and software concerns.

China is one of the most crucial markets for Tesla. The business has a significant production facility in Shanghai and has sold a record number of automobiles manufactured in China in recent months.

But Elon Musk’s automaker also faces increased rivalry from local rivals such as Warren Buffett’s BYD and startups XPeng, Nio, and Li Auto. And in 2023, electric vehicle manufacturers aim to debut a multitude of new automobiles.

Tesla lowered the price of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China in October, after increasing the prices earlier in the year due to growing material costs.
