Snoop Dogg and Eminem will perform from inside Yuga Labs’ upcoming metaverse game “Otherside” at the VMAs this Sunday, bringing their Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs.

According to MTV and Yuga Labs, the rap superstars will perform their song “From the D to the LBC.”

“Otherside” is still in development, and no release date has been set. The Web3 metaverse game is currently in “Phase 1,” which means that only owners of Otherdeed land NFTs and select developers have been able to test out aspects of the MMORPG-inspired title.

This VMA performance is yet another instance of NFTs infiltrating mainstream culture. NFTs, or one-of-a-kind blockchain tokens that represent ownership, have become digital status symbols for the wealthy and famous, and Bored Apes have been co-opted for everything from fast food restaurants to M&Ms.

According to the promoters, Snoop and Eminem’s “Otherside” performance will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Their music video for “From the D to the LBC,” which was released two months ago, features 2D animations of their Bored Ape NFTs but no metaverse footage.

“From the D to the LBC” has been a notable success for both the rappers and the emerging trend of Bored Ape-themed music videos since its release. The YouTube video for “D to the LBC” has received over 46 million views and a VMA nomination for “Best Hip-Hop Song.” The song has nearly 25 million streams on Spotify.

Eminem is clearly enjoying his BAYC NFT, which he purchased in December for a hefty $450,000 and has been using as his Twitter profile picture ever since. According to Etherscan data, Snoop received his Ape from crypto payments company MoonPay, which transferred Bored Ape #6723 to Snoop Dogg’s son, Champ de Medici, in December.

While “From the D to the LBC” is a lyrical hit for many fans, there has been no shortage of criticism directed at the NFTs prominently displayed on the song’s cover art and music video.
