Shiba Inu has officially launched its SHIB Name Service (SNS) on the Shibarium Layer-2 network, as part of the project’s effort to abandon its meme coin status.

According to Tuesday’s announcement, the SNS lets users to substitute traditionally complex blockchain addresses with simple, easily remembered domain names.

Interested parties can secure their “.SHIB” domain using name.shib.io for a charge in Bone ShibaSwap (BONE) tokens instead of ENS’ “.eth” ending. BONE tokens allow holders to vote on modifications to the Shibarium layer-2 network and are also used to pay transaction fees.

Shytoshi Kusama, Shiba Inu’s chief developer, also launched a new encrypted peer-to-peer messaging mechanism to boost user interactions on the Shibarium platform.

The messaging system and SNS are two components of a larger decentralized identity concept first revealed by the project’s developers in August.
