Following Minecraft’s lead, Grand Theft Auto has banned NFTs from its third-party online servers. Creator Rockstar Games acknowledged in a statement last week that developers cannot integrate cryptocurrencies or crypto assets like NFTs.
The new rules are designed exclusively for role-playing servers. Consider them to be spin-offs of the original GTA 5 made by fans and developers other than Rockstar Games. They allow players to assume the roles of non-playable characters, such as police officers, judges, and taxi drivers, so extending the capabilities of the base game.
The business emphasized that it will continue to support these servers despite the new limitations. It also prohibited the importation or use of other intellectual property in the project, including other Rockstar intellectual property, real-world brands, characters, trademarks, or music; and the creation of new games, narrative, missions, or maps.
“Rockstar Games has always supported reasonable fan creation and encourages creators to demonstrate their enthusiasm for our games. Third party ‘Roleplay’ servers are an extension of the vast variety of community-created experiences within Grand Theft Auto, which we hope will flourish for many years in a safe and welcoming environment “the business reported.
What will happen to companies now operating games with NFTs is unclear. MyMetaverse, situated in Australia, operates GTA 5 servers that incorporate tokens as well as NFTs in the shape of automobiles and swords. This was launched in September in collaboration with Enjin.
Rockstar Games is the most recent major American gaming firm to prohibit NFTs. While several gaming firms in other countries have begun exploring NFT and web3 projects, gaming executives in the U.S. have adopted a far more cautious approach and highlighted concerns that NFTs may be predatory.
Mojang Studios, the creators of Minecraft, banned non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from its servers in July, much to the dismay of businesses like NFT Worlds that had built their whole operation around Minecraft. Valve, the company that operates the gaming retailer Steam, has also criticized NFTs and stated that it does not want them on its platform.
Epic Games, a competitor of Valve, has been more impartial. The developers of Fortnite have let various games with NFTs to be sold on the Epic Titles store, but the company does not invest in or provide additional support for these games.
