Family members rushed to Queen Elizabeth II’s side after doctors expressed concern about the 96-year-old monarch’s health on Thursday (Sep 8), saying she should remain under medical supervision.

Since the end of last year, the queen, Britain’s longest-reigning sovereign and the world’s oldest monarch, has been suffering from “episodic mobility problems,” according to Buckingham Palace.

“The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the palace said in a statement.

The palace statement on the queen’s health is extremely unusual, and it comes after she has appeared visibly frailer in recent months.

Elizabeth spent a night in the hospital last October and has had to limit her public appearances since then. She canceled a virtual meeting with senior ministers on Wednesday after her doctors advised her to rest.

The previous day, she was photographed at Balmoral appointing Liz Truss as the country’s new prime minister, the 15th in her record-breaking reign.

According to a palace source, immediate family members have been informed, and speculation that the monarch has fallen has been played down.
