Monkeypox outbreak is deemed a global public health emergency by WHO

The global monkeypox outbreak has been designated by the World Health Organization as a “public health emergency of international concern,” placing it on par with illnesses like Covid-19, Ebola, and polio.

It was most recently employed for Covid-19 more than two years ago, and it carries the highest designation under international health rules. Though it began using the word for Covid in early 2020, the WHO is not authorized to proclaim pandemics.

Tedros stated that a WHO panel had been unable to determine, but given international health standards, he had nonetheless chosen to make the declaration, acting as a tie-breaker.

With the exception of Europe, where it was “high,” the risk of monkeypox was still minimal worldwide, he said.

Although the action does little more than raise awareness, it lays the path for further funding and solid international collaboration on research into monkeypox, which some experts have claimed has been lacking.

The illness, which has just lately been found on all continents inhabited and is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, was initially discovered decades ago.

According to the Geneva-based health organization, the majority of verified monkeypox cases—more than 16,000—have involved guys who have had sex with other men. According to the WHO, at least five fatalities have been reported in African countries.

Health officials have cautioned that if the sickness is not controlled, it could spread to populations that are more susceptible.

Rosamund Lewis, the technical director for monkeypox at the WHO, emphasized that because the disease seems to be confined to a particular population, it is still manageable.

Additionally, there are efficient defenses, such as an antiviral and a vaccine typically used to treat smallpox.

Governments are vying for supplies of both, and in certain locations, such as the UK, New York City, and portions of Canada, health officials have broadened vaccine eligibility to reach more conceivably vulnerable people. According to officials, some European nations are considering following suit.

A recent study in Nature Medicine reveals that the virus may be evolving more quickly than previously thought.

When the panel responsible for making the evaluation initially met in June, according to people with knowledge of the WHO’s discussions, there were divergent opinions on whether monkeypox should be classified as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).

The hesitation, according to a second source with knowledge of the conversations, was caused by worries that the health organization would be accused of “going over the top.”

When the decision was made, the WHO said that a consensus had been achieved and specified a number of situations that would cause it to be reviewed.

The WHO was criticized in 2020 for taking too long to designate Covid as a PHEIC; the process, they claimed, had become very politicized.

A novel outbreak affecting underserved areas and an endemic disease in Africa pose a “dual challenge,” according to Josie Golding, head of epidemics and epidemiology at the Wellcome Trust.
