Since the Russian war, Ukraine’s major food exports have decreased by nearly half

Data from the agriculture ministry showed late on Monday that exports of important agricultural products from Ukraine had decreased by about 50% since the beginning of the Russian invasion earlier this year compared to the same period in 2021. (Aug 22).

In what it described as a “special military operation,” Russia launched its assault on Ukraine on February 24. As a result of the conflict, Ukrainian seaports were closed, leaving a sizable portion of crops either unharvested or damaged.

According to ministry data, agricultural exports dropped to 10 million tonnes between February 24 and August 15 this year from over 19.5 million during the same time previous year.

From a record 86 million tonnes in 2021, the Ukrainian grain crop is anticipated to drop to roughly 50 million tonnes in 2022.

According to data from the ministry, Ukraine exported 640,000 tonnes of wheat, 1.4 million tonnes of sunflower oil, 3.8 million tonnes of corn, and 1.4 million tonnes of sunflower seeds between February 24 and August 15 of this year.
