Southwest China’s Chongqing municipality’s rural farmland was silent.

There were no farmers in sight, and the temperature was 42 degrees Celsius. Both people and agriculture could not survive the oppressive weather.

Farmers reported that they now labor in the fields as early as 3am. When daybreak came, it was time to seek shelter inside.

Wang Yong Fu, 70, has spent his entire life working in the fields. He indicated the withered tomato plants, which under normal weather conditions ought to have reached at least waist height.

In Chongqing, where peak temperatures in the past month hit a record 45 degrees Celsius, weeks of searing heat and no rain had left 66 rivers and 25 reservoirs dry.

China had the longest and hottest heat wave since meteorological records began in 1961 in July and August.

In some areas of the country, the heat has had a significant impact on agricultural production, which could lead to future increases in food inflation.

According to several local farmers, their harvest was down by 80% from the previous year.

The production of commodities including soybean, wheat, and corn would be impacted, the Central Meteorological Observatory has warned.

Due to their propensity to catch fire in extreme heat, farmers were less likely to employ agricultural tractors this summer.

The impact will be felt come harvest time, according to experts, as planting season has already started.

Prices for fresh produce had already increased by 12.9% and 16.9% year over year in July. The cost of pork has also increased in July from a year ago by 20.2%.

Over two million ha of arable land and 350,000 animals were impacted by the summer heat wave, according to information provided by the federal government.
