Three individuals were detained by American officials on Tuesday for allegedly participating in a conspiracy to steal millions of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrencies while defrauding American banks and a significant cryptocurrency exchange.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan has accused Esteban Cabrera Da Corte, Luis Hernandez Gonzalez, and Asdrubal Ramirez Meza of a number of crimes, including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

According to an unsealed indictment, the three Miami-based men opened accounts with a prominent cryptocurrency exchange using pictures of phony passport and driver’s licenses in order to purchase more than $4 million in bitcoin.

The accounts were connected to the trio’s controlled bank accounts. The men promptly transferred the cryptocurrency they had just bought into wallets they had created outside of the exchange. When they called the banks to report the unlawful purchases, the banks paid them back.

According to the indictment, the conspiracy was carried out over a period of months at the beginning of 2020. The Department of Homeland Security’s El Dorado Task Force, a long-running money laundering program, carried out the investigation that led to the men’s capture.

At the moment, Messrs. Cabrera, Hernandez, and Ramirez are unavailable for comments. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, the men will appear in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
