The major rival of AMC Entertainment (AMC), Cineworld, revealed on Monday that it is considering applying for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, sending AMC Entertainment (AMC) shares down.

After the Wall Street Journal reported on the Chapter 11 option, which the organization said Monday is one of its options as it looks to reduce debts accumulated during the pandemic and its failed takeover of Canada-based Cineplex, U.K.-based Cineworld, which owns Regal theaters in the U.S., hit a record low on Friday.

In pre-market trading, AMC shares were marked 35.35% down, indicating an opening bell price of $11.65 per share.

AMC announced earlier this month that it would issue a special preferred share dividend with the ticker symbol “APE,” a reference to retail stock traders who share information on the Reddit message board, and that it would post a larger-than-expected second quarter loss of 24 cents per share on revenues of just over $1.1 billion.

Each AMC shareholder will get one APE preferred share worth one twentieth of the price of an AMC share as of Friday’s trade closure.

On Monday, those so-called APE shares will be distributed and will trade separately before converting into AMC ordinary stock. However, their conversion potential will reduce the market value of AMC shares, adding to the negative pressure in early Monday trade and subject to approval by APE shareholders.
