Workers at a San Bernardino, California, Amazon air freight center went on strike on Monday in protest of their wages and working conditions.

The organization of protesting employees, known as Inland Empire Amazon Workers United, reported on Twitter that 160 employees had left work on Monday.

In a reply to Insider, an Amazon official disputed this number, claiming that just 74 out of a total of 1,500 employees participated in the walkout.

In July, the organization handed a letter to facility management bearing the signatures of 800 workers requesting more pay in light of rising living expenses.

In particular, the organization wants a $5 per hour pay increase and better working conditions.

The Post said that during meetings on August 3 and August 5, managers proposed a salary increase of $1.50 per hour for weekday night hours and $2 for weekend night shifts. The source added that managers advised employees to carpool and take public transportation in order to save money.

The minimum wage for employees at KSBD, according to an Amazon spokeswoman, is $17 per hour. The living wage for a single adult without children in San Bernardino, according to the MIT calculator, is estimated to be $18.66 per hour.

Additionally, the protesting employees want Amazon to strengthen its health and safety policies, particularly with regard to heat. The group claimed on Twitter that the facility’s temperatures can exceed 95 degrees.

According to a representative for Amazon, the building has air conditioning inside.

The San Bernardino workers aren’t the first to threaten Amazon with a work stoppage, but Marc Wulfraat, an industry consultant, told The Post that because of their location as an air freight center, they are especially important to Amazon’s extensive logistical network.

Earlier this month, Amazon employees in the UK protested at four warehouses after being given a pay increase of £0.35 ($0.42).

After the firm witnessed the formation of its first-ever US union at a Staten Island warehouse in April, worker organization at Amazon has been somewhat encouraged.

The Staten Island union’s founding, according to Fee, was “extremely amazing.”

When Insider approached Inland Empire Amazon Workers United for comment outside of regular West Coast working hours, they did not answer right away.
