The businesses declared at a consumer electronics expo in Berlin on Friday that Meta Platforms had reached an agreement with Qualcomm to have the latter create unique chipsets for its Quest virtual reality (VR) devices (Sep 2).

The chips, which are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platforms, will be produced by a joint effort of the engineering and product teams of the two firms, according to a release.

The partnership demonstrates Meta’s dependence on Qualcomm’s technology even as it works to create its own proprietary silicon for its augmented, mixed, and virtual reality devices. Meta was formerly known as Facebook until last year.

As it works to realize Zuckerberg’s vision for the metaverse, a notion incorporating an immersive collection of virtual worlds, Meta has been aggressively investing in technologies like pass-through goggles and augmented reality glasses.

Since several years ago, it has used Qualcomm CPUs in its VR devices, including the most recent Quest2 headset.

According to Tyler Yee, a representative for Meta, the chipsets created through the partnership won’t be proprietary to Meta but will be tailored specifically for Quest’s system requirements.

The deal’s financial details weren’t made public.

According to Yee, the deal only applies to VR devices, and Meta will continue to focus on creating some of its own semiconductor solutions.
