One of the Argentine Football Association’s (AFA) initial forays towards web3 fan involvement is a partnership with metaverse company Upland.

In the agreement, fans of AFA will get access to digital memorabilia and a virtual hangout area.

AFA President Claudio Fabian Tapia in a statement: “The Argentine Professional League has long awaited opportunities to take advantage of emerging technologies to enhance our League’s fan experience.” He also added that “This agreement allows us to partner with the best creators of technology and new digital products and thus generate a new source of income for all participating clubs.”

With over 3 million registered users, the virtual land trading game Upland allows players to buy and sell real-world locations. The game’s developer raised $18 million in a financing headed by Animoca Brands in November 2021, valuing the company at $300 million at the time.

Throughout the World Cup, the fan token associated with Argentina’s team climbed, but it fell not long after Argentina’s victory.
