According to court filings, prosecutors want to limit FTX founder and ex-CEO Sam Bankman-Fried’s access to encrypted messaging systems and prevent connection with former FTX and Alameda workers after prosecutors indicated he was attempting to influence witnesses.

Bankman-Fried’s text according to US authorities, were “suggestive of an effort to influence” a witness’ evidence. The witness is reported to have received orders via the encrypted messaging software Signal for “liquidating Alameda’s investments to fulfill FTX client withdrawals” in November to plug a $45 million deficit in FTX US’s balance sheet.

“I would really want to reconnect and see if there’s a way for us to have a productive connection, use each other as resources when feasible, or at least vet things with one other,” SBF wrote to “Witness-1” on Jan. 15.

“This is especially troubling considering that the defendant is aware that Witness-1 has information that would tend to inculpate the defendant,” the letter stated. “The request for a “productive relationship” suggests that Witness-1 should side with the defendant. This is especially troubling considering that the defendant is aware that Witness-1 has information that would tend to implicate the defendant.”

He also talked directly with the current general counsel of FTX US, who investigators believe may be a trial witness.

Bankman-Fried spoke with other current and former FTX workers through email and Signal, which is consistent with “a history of utilizing the program for obstructive objectives,” according to the affidavit.
