Exchange of cryptocurrencies Bitfinex reported a “minor” information security breach after one of its customer service workers was compromised between Oct. 30 and Nov. 5.

It triggered a wave of phishing assaults on Bitfinex users, but the firm clarified in a Nov. 4 statement that minimal damage was done.

“A small portion of our customer support boards, which held partial, incomplete and stale information was accessed by an individual or group, through the phishing of a customer support agent.”

Fortunately, the customer support representative lacked “senior permissions” and thus had limited access to supporting tools and help desk tickets, according to the firm.

Bitfinex underlined that its systems had not been breached and that no customer monies had been stolen.
