The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Meta Platforms dismissed or reprimanded over two dozen workers and contractors who allegedly infiltrated and took control of customer accounts.

In other cases, bribery was involved, the Journal claimed, citing sources and documents.

Users who were locked out of their Facebook accounts were frequently unable to recover access using usual procedures, such as contacting Facebook directly, according to the research. Consequently, some users sought out external sources with Meta contacts who were willing to unlock their accounts.

According to papers examined by the Journal, in some instances personnel received bribes of thousands of dollars from hackers to compromise or access user accounts. According to the Journal, the terminations or disciplinary actions were the outcome of an internal probe.

According to the study, some of the terminated workers were Allied Universal contractors who provided security for Meta locations and had access to internal staff tools to aid corporate employees.

According to the Journal, the tools were referred to as “Oops,” an abbreviation for Online Operations, and were designed for internal and special case use. According to the study, the system permitted employees to regain access to their proper account.
